批判的思考は、21世紀において発達させる必要がある最も重要なスキルの一つである。批判的思考は、近代社会にあふれる情報を解明するために必要不可欠である。特に科学と健康に関連した情報を評価するためには重要である。このミニ・シンポでは、ミュンスター大学のLisa Scharrer博士とチャールズ・スタート大学のRachel Dryerが最新の重要な研究結果を紹介し、彼女らと参加者によるディスカッションを実施する。

Critical thinking is one of the most important skills that people living in the 21st Century need to develop. Critical thinking is necessary to make sense of information that is ubiquitous in modern societies. Particularly important is the evaluation of the quality of scientific and health-related information, as the outcomes of such evaluation could have significant impact on the wellbeing of people. For instance, if we make serious errors in such evaluation and believe in erroneous information, there could be serious detrimental effects on our physical and mental health as well as many other aspects of our life.
This mini-symposium will present some important new research findings in this topic area from Dr Lisa Scharrer (University of Munster, Germany) and Dr Rachel Dryer (Charles Sturt University, Australia). There will be opportunities not only to listen to their presentations, but also to discuss with them international perspectives on various theoretical, research, and educational issues in critical thinking and evaluation.

教育学研究科では、平成29年2月15日、15時から教育学研究科本館2階216教室にて、「科学と健康に関連した情報に対する批判的思考と評価」と題してドイツのミュンスター大学心理学部Lisa Scharrer研究員とオーストラリアのチャールズ・スタート大学心理学研究科Rachel Dryer上級講師をお招きしてご講演いただき、討論会を開催しました。2名とも当学教育学研究科教育認知心理学講座マナロ教授と批判的評価と心の理論に関する科研プロジェクトにおいて共同研究を行っています。まず15時から15時15分まではマナロ教授が批判的思考と評価について概説を行い、21世紀の環境において、特に科学・健康に関する情報を理解し、選択を行う際にこれらのスキルが非常に重要である理由について述べました。15時15分から16時15分まではDr. Scharrerが「Don’t make yourself the measure of all things: Potential biases when laypeople evaluate scientific information」について講演し、科学に関する情報が大衆メディアにおいて簡潔化され過ぎて、非常に重要で複雑な問題について専門家の助言が不要であると誤って想定させてしまいがちであることを指摘しました。16時15分から17時15分までは、Dr. Dryerが「What effect does Theory of Mind ability and “unpacking” information have on people’s ability to critically evaluate health-related information?」について講演し、マナロ教授とScharrer先生との共同研究プロジェクトでオーストラリアの実験参加者について分かったことについて述べ、心の理論と、偏ったまたは公正な情報の批判的評価の間に、関連があることが明らかになってきたことについて説明しました。17時15分から18時15分は、シンポジウムの参加者との質疑応答セッションと議論の場とし、教育、医療決定、地域の健康、メディアの責任など、幅広い分野における研究結果の適用について、参加者との質問や活発な議論が行われました。

Report：

At the Graduate School of Education, on February 15, 2017, we held a mini-symposium entitled “Critical Thinking and Evaluation of Scientific and Health-Related Information”. The guest speakers were Dr Lisa Scharrer (Department of Psychology, University of Munster, Germany), and Dr Rachel Dryer (School of Psychology, Charles Sturt University, Australia). Both Dr Scharrer and Dr Dryer have been collaborating with Professor Emmanuel Manalo (Department of Cognitive Educational Psychology) on a Kaken research project concerning critical evaluation and theory of mind.
The mini-symposium went very successfully. From 15:00 to 15:15, Professor Manalo started by giving a brief introduction to critical thinking and evaluation, and why these skills are so important in 21st Century environments, particularly where understanding of and decision making about scientific and health-related information are concerned. From 15:15 to 16:15, Dr Scharrer provided a lecture entitled “Don’t make yourself the measure of all things: Potential biases when laypeople evaluate scientific information”. She pointed out how scientific information is often over-simplified in popular media, leading many people to erroneously assume that they no longer need to seek advice from experts on even very important, complicated matters. Then from 16:15 to 17:15, Dr Dryer gave a lecture entitled “What effect does Theory of Mind ability and “unpacking” information have on people’s ability to critically evaluate health-related information?” This lecture reported on findings from Australian participants regarding the collaborative research project that she has been working on with Professor Manalo and Dr Scharrer. Key findings indicate some connections between Theory of Mind ability (in simple terms: the ability to recognize and attribute mental states not only in ourselves but also in other people) and performance in critically evaluating multiple pieces of biased and unbiased information. From 17:15 to 18:15, there was a question-and-answer session and open discussion with the symposium participants on various implications of the research findings on education, medical decision making, community health, media responsibility, and so on.
