プログラムに参加するには、本学の連携5領域の大学院いずれかに入学した上で、プログラム履修者の選抜を受けることになります。学生は各領域に所属しながら、本プログラムも履修します。
1～2年次は、デザイン学共通科目を中心に「デザイン学」の基本の考え方を習得。そこで得た知識や手法を活かし、各領域の教員、実務家の協力の下でさまざまな演習に挑戦します。その後2年次から3年次への進級時に博士論文研究基礎力審査（QE）を実施し、博士研究を開始する資格が備わっているかどうかを審査します。
3～5年次には、産官学協働のプロジェクトにチームマネジャー、あるいは専門領域の研究者として参加します。学外のさまざまなイベントにも参加して体験を重ねることで、深い洞察力、柔軟な視野、積極性に富む実行力を獲得していきます。
