“Further Benefit of a kind of Inconvenience” is one of the princile of systems design. We do not live in the stone age where “efficiecy” is the unique principle of design.
Desert islands are not convenient to live, but there are may beneficial inconvenience. Let’s design a tour that hilights and facilitaes experiences the benefits.

Overview

Designing systems based on appreciating benefit of inconvenience is one of the successive theme of Kyoto Univ. Summer Design School. Design works for this theme were

    Problem solving based on “harms of convenience,”
    Value mining based on “benefits of convenience,” and
    Design emargence based on “beneifts of inconvenience.”
The class of this year is going to carry out a design work based on “harms of inconvenience.”

The field of design is a desert island and the target of design is adventure travel to the island which is difficult to access, has no infrastructure of water, gas nor electricity supply. No one supply foodstuff. The class is required to design a tour that turns those harms of inconvenence into beneficial ones, under the conditions that the tour can be implemented at Yanaha Island, Okinawa.

Educational Goals

The principle of design systems including human is not just confined to “efficiency.” This class gives experiences of alternative design principle so called “benefits of inconvenience.”

Design Theory and Design Methods

Design theory besed on “further benefits of a kind of inconvenience.”

[Design method]

Ideation method is brestbattle (brain storming battle) that consists of two stages, i.e., divergent thinking stage based on four principles of brain storming and converget thinking stage based on idea entries and presentation battles.
