“Further Benefit of a kind of Inconvenience” is one of the princile of systems design. We do not live in the stone age where “efficiecy” is the unique principle of design.
Non-store retailing system has been evolved toward providing consumers with convenience, but there must be another direction of its evolution. Let’s design a new non-store retailing that hilights and facilitaes experiences the benefits of inconvenience.

Designing systems based on appreciating benefits of inconvenience is one of the successie theme of Kyoto Univ. Summer Design School.
The target of this year is non-store retailing, which is one of the byword for convenience. Catalog retailing, mail-order shopping, online shopping with a credit card are easy way of shopping.
We will design a new non-store retailing system that incooperate the benefits of inconvenience.
The principle of design systems including human is not just confined to “efficiency.” This class gives experiences of alternative design principle so called “benefits of inconvenience.”
- Design theory besed on “further benefits of a kind of inconvenience.”
- Basic process is IDEO version of Human-centered Desgin (inspiration, ideation, implementation). Ideation methods are the type of problem solving, type of value mining, type of emergence, and type of value transformation.
- Icebreaking Input “on system design based on benefits of inconvenience”
Input “on non-store retailing systems”
- Ideation 1 “value mining”
- Ideation 2 “problem solving”
- Ideation 3 “emergence by one hundred knocks”
- Fleshing out the ideas by prototyping
- Refine the ideas
