Professor Wilhelm Hofmann(University of Cologne, Germany)

Previous research suggests that self-control is a struggle between desires and self regulatory goals. Based on this framework, the present research examines how designing a tempting product with anthropomorphic (i.e., human-like) features affects consumer self-control, and specifically whether it affects desire, self-regulatory goals, or both. Our findings suggest that anthropomorphism impairs self-control not by affecting desire for the temptation, but by decreasing one’s experience of conflict toward consuming the temptation?an alarm that signals a need for self-control. The present study contributes to the self-control and consumer literature as the first research that identifies anthropomorphism as an important design factor that reduces self-control. It also goes beyond earlier work on anthropomorphism by exploring its effect on consumer self-control and showing that anthropomorphism can lead to suboptimal behaviors that undermine the pursuit of consumers’long-term goals.
